Shilpa Suchak showcased her project “Untitled Experiences”. It was an elegant evening , where guests observed her works over wine and cheese at Tradition Art, Juhu. Bina Aziz of Tradition Art was also there to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of her gallery.

Guests who attended and were seen observing the talented artist’s works were Brinda Miller, Irfan KHan, Sonal Chauhan, sheetal Malhar, Mahima Mehta, Vinod and Madhuri Sharma, Keyur Patel ,Rajat Ghosh and DJ Tarun among others.

Untitled Experiences …is a project initiated to explore interpersonal relationships. Shilpa lost her brother and father in a period of five years, and in the process of exploring her relationship with her mother, she began on a journey that led to these ‘Untitled Experiences…’.

Her body of work is a combination of different mediums – she essentially creates a collage around one photograph, layering it physically and mentally in an effort to link two existences together- past and present.

Shilpa describes herself as a process-oriented-artist, “I don’t pre-decide the outcome of my work…I let the raw materials guide me.” For this body of work, Shilpa was forced to go back to her family’s past and look at letters, certificates and photographs. According to Shilpa, “These precious memories became my fodder to express the history of my family.”

Although the narrative of Untitled Experiences… begins with its raw material – it is resolved on a visual. The work itself takes the form of a series of photographs incorporating techniques such as multiple exposures, sequences and aspects of mixed media such as montage and collage- then photographing them, while using light to emphasize colour and value. Shilpa says, “My work is mixed media but transformed in photographic terms, where issues of surface or textural qualities must be resolved, on one single two-dimension photographic plane.”

Many of her contemporaries feel that her work is yet un-paralleled in Mumbai. Brinda Chudasama Miller feels strongly that,” Shilpa is a talented artist making her foray into the world of ‘art photography’. This young artist is skilled in multimedia. She brings freshness to her works by using layers of photo collage in her endeavour to showcase themes which are obviously close to her heart. The use of texture and perspective add an interesting fourth dimension to her artwork.”

Artist Profile: Shilpa Suchak

Born in Mumbai, India, on April 19th in 1977, Shilpa did her schooling here. There after she graduated in Applied Art from J. J School of Art in 1999 and worked in an ad agency. She immediately realized that advertising was not her forte and went to San Fransisco to study photography. Shilpa knew that photographs were a major part of her daily life growing up. Her parents were doctors by profession but were always taking pictures wherever they went. She lost her father in 1989 and her elder brother in 1994, leaving just her mother and herself in the family. Her mother and she were always close but somehow these two incidents bought them even closer. Shilpa has even modeled in her college days and featured in the famous Dooba Dooba music video by Silk Route. She modeled for Sunsilk Shampoo and was one of the finalist in Gladrags beauty contest. But she left all of that to pursue her true calling-art.

Untitled Experiences is Shilpa’s debut art show in India. Says Shilpa: “Art was my calling. Fine art found me, I didn’t go after it.”
